Déréal Digital Magazine and Carla Gasparrini are organizing an online Photobook Workshop, blending theoretical insights with practical sessions. Led by Carla Gasparrini, the workshop will guide participants through the process of creating photobooks, from initial concept development to final execution. Below is an outline of the proposed workshop framework, designed with flexibility to adapt to participants’ needs and suggestions.

Workshop Structure
 

  • Introduction & Theory: The workshop begins with a 2 hour theoretical session open to all (no limit on number of participants). This session introduces photobook history, creation and the emergence of the artist's book or book-works.

  • Practical Workshops: Conducted online, the practical sessions focus on the hands-on aspects of photobook creation. These sessions are scheduled across 2 weekends (4 days in total -Saturdays and Sundays-), with a total duration of approximately 24 - 28 hours. Participation is based on selection through an open call (maximum number of participants - 12)

Workshop Outline 

Theoretical session:  History and Theory of Photobooks 

 

Theoretical session will cover the history of the photobook as we know it today. We will discuss the contemporary artistic movements that led to its creation and the emergence of the artist's book or book-works, following the theories of Mexican historian, researcher, curator, and artist Ulises Carrión, as well as theorist Clive Phillpot.

Practical sessions: From Concept to Creation 

This workshop spans four practical sessions over two weekends, focusing on photobook development, including portfolio reviews and interactive feedback from Carla Gasparrini.The workshop covers key topics: book composition, color theory, printing techniques, sequencing, and dummy creation. Hands-on exercises will help participants refine their photobook concepts, select and arrange images, and develop a physical or digital dummy. The final session includes a comprehensive review, peer and mentor feedback, and discussions on future steps for publication and collaboration.

 

* Please note that the theoretical workshops are open to everyone upon reservation, while selected participants for the practical sessions will have full access to both theoretical and practical components.

Selection Criteria: Based on portfolio submission (with at least 45 images of finished photographic series).
